You’ve planned your content, you’ve played with HTML and you’ve selected a color scheme. Now add some graphical spice.

As Internet connections get faster and cheaper, people are beginning to lose their prejudices about web sites that use a lot of graphics. Yet, there are those who will always browse with images turned off, but it is increasingly becoming the case that if you want people to look at your site, then it needs to look good.

There are exceptions, where content is so compelling that design doesn’t matter. Just remember, however good a site looks, it is nothing without quality content.

Ready-Made Graphics

When you decide to add graphics to your site, you have 2 basic options. Either create your own images or make use of the numerous collections of royalty-free web graphics. These can come from many sources, the most popular being direct from the web. If you look at the web graphics section at Yahoo you’ll find a varied selection of free images you can use for your site, including e-mail buttons, background images and horizontal rules. Other popular sources include the clip art collections that come with most graphics packages these days.

There are, however, a couple of caveats. First, the quality of these images can most charitably be described as ‘varied’ – some are pretty good, but some are downright awful. Second, you need to bear in mind that every other novice web designer has access to the very same selection of images, and it does tend to show. On the plus side, the graphics are almost always completely free and you don’t need any artistic skills to use them.

Home-Made Graphics

If you want to create a unique web site, you have to create your own graphics – simple as that. There is an ever-increasing array of software to help you do this, ranging from freeware and shareware to full commercial products. Some of the better packages will cater for every need from start to finish. All you need provide is the talent and imagination.

JPEG Images

Before you start, you need to learn about the two image formats used on the web. First there is the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group). This achieves a high level of compression by separating the colors from the details and processing them separately. When they are recombined, you have a color picture. But this is more than you need to know. What is important is that this works very well for graphics with smooth color transitions and few sharp edges – typically photographic images – and looks terrible for line art and blocks of text. The result is that, when used appropriately, a jpeg image will achieve a very small file size alongside a picture with thousands of colors and little noticeable loss in quality.

GIF Images

The alternative is CompuServe’s GIF (Graphics Interchange Format). A huge image has its colors restricted to its own palette, which can contain up to 256 colors. GIF compression works by looking for repeating patterns within an image – hence large areas of a single color will produce a very small file – but GIFs are also ideal for any line or text where it is vital to retain the image’s detail.

GIFs can also be used to tailor an image to a computer that can only display 256 colors. By limiting an image to the standard palette of 256 web-safe colors, you can be almost certain it will appear the same in any browser. In practice, it is preferable to strike a balance between using web-safe colors and achieving the best image quality – then those users with better displays will not be restricted by the lowest common denominator.

The humble GIF has also a few tricks hidden up its sleeve. The first of these is the ability to set one of the colors in the palette to be transparent – which means that whatever this color appears on the image, the background of the web page will show through, allowing you to make the graphics blend in to a much greater extent.

You can also string a load of images together into one file to create an animated GIF. This means you can have animation on your page without requiring any extra plug-ins. Bear in mind that every frame added to an animation adds to the file’s size, and unless used sparingly, animated GIFS can become very tiresome.

X Marks The Spot

The main use of graphics on any site is usually to form a navigation system. One way to achieve this is to make each option a separate image, but often it can be neater to have your buttons as a single graphic. You can then use an image map to link different areas to different pages. In the past, the only way to do this was to create a server-side image map – the co-ordinates of a mouse click would be sent to the server, which would then redirect you to a specific page. But now any reasonably up-to-date browser supports client-side maps – a few lines of code in the page itself define the hotspots, and the link goes direct to the target page, with no fuss.

PNG Images

Soon you’ll be hearing about another image format – the Portable Network Graphic, or PNG. The file specification was designed with the web in mind, and is already supported by the next generation of browsers. The PNG performs much the same function as a GIF, with two main differences: PNG files are noticeably smaller than GIF, and they can use alpha transparency. In other words, the image can have varying degrees of transparency, so it will blend into any background. But don’t throw away your old tools yet – GIFs will be around for some time to come.

A great way to get design ideas for your website is to check out cool websites that appeal to your tastes and match-up with the look you desire for your own Internet presence. There are so many styles of websites from which to choose, and browsing through cool websites is not just informational it is also a lot of fun.

You can search for website ideas for businesses inside or outside of your niche or industry. If you are interested in looking within your specific industry, try using an online search engine by typing in a keyword for your industry and the word “websites” or “cool websites” or “website design.” You can do a similar search for any industry that peaks your interest. Another way to search for ideas is to visit professional web designer’s business sites. Typically, they provide examples of their work and can be a good resource for cool website ideas.

The options available to customize your website design are endless. Below is just a small sampling of ideas to get you started in your brainstorming for creation of cool websites:

• Incorporate swap images and/or rollovers to give your website a polished feel.
• Avoid image backgrounds and pop-up windows; not only do they give off an amateurish vibe, but the pop-up window is probably one of the most annoying website features, second only to autoplay music.
• Use DHTML if you need to have sub menus or a more complicated site navigation system. It will streamline the process.
• Avoid using Flash for an entire site, but incorporate small animations or page intros where appropriate. Flash can add some flair and is a way to optimize your site.
• Forget boring clip art or overused graphics and either design them yourself or use fresh designs from a professional. Many cool websites use graphic effects like collages, bevels and eye-catching page headers to make the site appealing.
• Use simple backgrounds and contrasting text to make your site easy to read. A cool website is not confusing but has easily accessible text.

There is no reason to feel insecure about starting your own website. While it can be intimidating to see all of the great ideas on cool websites, you can use those ideas to shape your vision for your website. That’s right—your site can become one of the cool websites!

If you are interested in learning the process of website design, choose a class or online tool with excellent user reviews and customer service, so you can get the help you need along the way. You’ll need it. If you want to save time and get down to business, creating your cool website ASAP, contact the professionals.

Get the Free Image and Photo Resizer Software Download for Webmasters: New or Experienced!

Original photos are almost always never the right size for web sites. They usually take too long to show up on a browser because it takes time for a large file to download. Also, they’re usually too big to fit on a page; and in most cases, when you resize these photos, whoever or whatever were in them becomes too small.

It’s hard enough to learn to code a web page. It would be very frustrating for a budding webmaster to spend zillions of hours learning technical details of image processing. It’s just very fortunate that one of today’s programs bundle the most important image processing features into a single, very affordable program. We are featuring Bulk Photo Resizer in this article (it’s free to try out). We’ll explain the key things like file sizes, compression, photo resizing, and cropping. After reading this article, you’ll be able to put images into your web page effortlessly.

Whatever the source of your photos is, you’ll need to make sure they are of right dimensions and file sizes for your web site. Dimensions mean the size of the image that you see on the display. File size refers to amount of storage space the picture takes up or how much data the picture contains. The larger the file size, the more amount of time it takes to download and appear on a visitor’s browser. Web surfers are very finicky, so you don’t want to have a site that takes too much time to bring up images. The more images there are, the longer it takes for them to load and the site to show completely.

The good news is that you can reduce the file size without giving up much image quality. This can be done through a process called compression. Bulk Photo Resizer makes this procedure painless to do.

But what should your photo’s dimensions be? You need to consider first, the screen size of the average monitor; some are larger or smaller, but most people have 800 pixels across. If a certain picture is really important to the site, then you would want to fill the main column of your page. If it is less important, than you may just fill half of the main column and have text flowing around it, or you can just place it in a narrower side column. Once you have decided on a page layout, you can now come up with the perfect dimensions of the images. For example, let’s say you have a single side column of 200 pixels and a main column of 600 pixels. For the largest, most important picture, you would limit the width to 600 pixels minus whatever margin you have (padding) around the picture, so it doesn’t sit flush against the sides of the column. Unless your site really requires a lot of large pictures, you don’t want to have more than one. For the side column, you would want to limit the picture to 200 pixels minus your padding around the picture.

With Bulk Photo Resizer, you simply click on Resize and select custom size to get the exact width you desire. You only have to set the width and Bulk Photo Resizer will make sure the height is exactly the right proportion to prevent any unsightly stretching of your image. Maintaining everything in the right shape is called “preserving the aspect ratio.”

If you are able to create high-resolution photos or have purchased stock photos, then you have no problem making a good impression. If an image’s resolution is not so good, then you can try making it a smaller size so that the low image quality would not be so noticeable. Be sure to get to know your camera if you are doing your own photography. You can adjust the resolution or image quality to a higher level if you want to. This will eat up more camera memory, but it is the recommended setting for the really important or detailed shots.

After you have decided on the size of the image, something you’ll want to do before you resize it is to crop it. You’ll want to do this with most of your photos. When you crop an image, you’re trimming away its outer areas in order to feature the important objects or people in the photo. Bulk Photo Resizer, our featured program, makes this very easy. If the results don’t impress you, you can discard the changes you have done and try again. You can use Bulk Photo Resizer for one picture at a time, or on hundreds of photos all at once. Our testers reported that it was nearly impossible to make mistakes.

There’s actually one mistake you don’t want to make – not saving a backup of the original image. Make sure to save the image you are resizing under a different file name when you’re making a major change. This way, if you decide you don’t like it, you can start over with the original image. What I do is add an underscore, then a number for a major version, then a letter for the smaller changes. The file name of the first change would end in “_1b.jpg,” for example. I also like to add something to remind me what I did if the project is likely to get complicated, for example, “_1b_crop.jpg.” The good thing about 1b, 1c and so forth, is that it keeps the image versions in chronological order when they are sorted by name in Windows Explorer, the Windows built-in program you use to look at the directories and files on your hard drive and peripherals.

When saving a photo, you will need to know how much compression to use. You want to compress the image that will be going onto your website. If you’re just saving an image and plan to do more to it, then don’t use any compression. If an image has a file type of .jpg, then keep the compression setting at the lowest (meaning highest resolution). If the image is of .bmp file type, then it will not allow any compression unless you convert it to or save it as a .jpg.

A compressed photo takes up less space and downloads to browsers much faster. The problem with compression, though, is loss of quality. Too much compression can cause your photo to become pretty blotchy. Almost all the images you see on the web are compressed. The file type that is best for images with shades of color or gradients of light and dark is .jpg. The popular file type for solid color art such as typical clip art, especially if they use transparent areas to get a non-square shape is .gif; .jpg images can’t do this although it can be simulated by using the exact same background color as the spot they will be in. If you do this correctly, the background will blend in with the website.

If you are saving an image in its final form, then some compression is usually recommended. With Bulk Photo Resizer, compressing images is very easy. If you want compression to be not that obvious, use 80. Compression scale goes from zero to 100. 60 is a considerably high level of compression since the image starts to be noticeably blotchy at this setting. There should be no noticeable effect of compression at a setting of 90 or higher, although it will still reduce the file size a good bit.

Remember that other web sites, such as picture posting sites, social networking sites, and dating sites all have rules as to how many kilobytes a photo can be. If they say it must be less than 100 KB, then check the size of your photo in a program such as Photo Resizer to see if your photo needs to be compressed or made smaller. Either action, resizing down or compressing, will give you a smaller file size.

Before we proceed further, let me make sure you understand the difference between image size (dimensions) and file size (kilobytes) since this causes confusion to a lot of people. Image size, simply defined, is how big your photo looks while file size is how much space it takes up on your hard drive. Larger file sizes take more time to be displayed on a browser since the greater the file size, the more time it needs to be downloaded.

After cropping your photo, you are now ready to resize. Enlarging a photo is not a good idea. One of Bulk Photo Resizer’s features is that it prevents this to be done. The reason for this is that when digital pictures are enlarged, the images start to get jagged edges (also called “jaggies”). Pixels are those little squares that make up the image. When these pixels get too big, the effect is similar to the one used on TV to obscure someone’s face or license plate. This effect is called pixelation. I’m sure you’ve seen pixelated images on the net; and it looks pretty inexpert.

I’m sure you already have a hint that cropping an image gives you smaller dimensions. Bulk Image Resizer has tabs which will let you know the exact dimensions of the photo.

The internet is full of excellent resources to help you give your web pages the right structure, as well as how to position things like photos on your page. Here are a couple tips to get you started. An example of an image tag is as follows: <img src=”images/cousin_bill.jpg”>

That command, in layman’s terms, stands for “The source of the image is ‘cousin_bill.jpg’ in the directory ‘images.’” You can also give a full address, such as “http://www.mywebsite.com/images/cousin_bill.jpg” if you want.

It is also recommended to give the dimensions in the tag, so that the web page will not jump around as the image is forming in the visitor’s browser. Following is an example: <img src=”images/cousin_bill.jpg” height=”100” width=”192” alt=”Cousin Bill”>. We also added the “alt” tag which makes the text show up when you put the cursor over the image. This tag also helps blind people know what images are on the page when their screen reader programs are talking to them.

There’s plenty of other stuff you can learn about digital photos and putting them on your web site, however, we have covered what we believe are the most important things: cropping, resizing, compression, saving, and the image tag. We hope you have fun creating your web pages!

Creative Director
Lets start at the top and work down. Art directors, or Creative Directors are responsible for a creative team that may design work for magazines, television, advertising graphics, websites, or on packaging. A creative team can consist of layout artists, graphic designers, photographers, copywriters, and menial staff to do the work. An Art directors job is to make sure that each of these workers do not slack off down the pub and complete their work to a deadline and to the client’s needs. Art directors also make major decisicions along the lines of should the background be slate grey or cobalt blue, issuing dictates and changing their mind several days after a deadline has passed – leaving co-workers resolutely glum about their position in the grand scheme of things. Art directors will inevitably have come from some kind of marketing or sales background and need no prior graphic design knowledge or skill.

Senior Designer

A Senior Designer is mainly concerned with the visual aspects of a company and will probably have been promoted on the basis that she is fun and a ‘great team player’ (despite this being far from the case). A Senior Designer will usually insist on having a larger widescreen monitor than the rest of the team which will be decorated variously with fluffy pink bits marketing people send through on a daily basis. A Senior Designer will be involved in the elements of a company’s look such as business cards, stationery, packaging design, media advertising graphics, promotional design, and sticking up pictures of topless ‘hunks’.

Graphic Designer

The job of a Graphic Designer is to provide a new and exciting way to express the key information of a company or product through a dynamic image or use of typography. Graphic Designers take the scant information given to them by the client and using the internet to scab some free clip art, fashion their own ripped off logo designs in order to fleece the client for all they are worth.

Layout Artists and Artworkers

The engine room of the design world. These scumbags have been buried away with their dusty macs for decades, remorselessly churning out pages and layouts. Inevitably some clueless muppet will send over a 100 page brochure layed out in microsoft word and it will be the Artworkers thankless task to make it publishable. They will need to recognise a font at 50 yards, be able to colour correct the dreariest of images and take a good bollocking every now and again to keep them on their toes. The Artworker must have the ability to design magazines, design brochures, design flyers, design books and design posters. He harbours murder fantasies.

Following these 7 mesh position design tips be supposed to operate a long way towards scraping sour the cheese and increasing the credibility of your problem mesh position.

1. Lose the clip art, veto problem how cute or clever. Use a nice-looking photograph as an alternative. Preferably a photo with the purpose of shows your result in employment or a fulfilled client, but even a well-chosen horses photo would be better than clip art. And animated clip art? Unless you’re a real design whiz, merely say “never”.

2. Reduce the size of copious photos. If a few single photo is finished 350 pixels extensive or 300 pixels superior it’s probably too sizeable in support of your problem mesh position. Hint: Employment your photo-editing software, not your HTML editor, to reduce the size.

The World Wide Web, or commonly known as the internet, is a melting pot of everything under the sun. It has changed the way we live and a lot of things we do. Communication has become easier and faster than ever before. From New York you can send a letter to a friend in Tokyo in milliseconds. You can speak with a loved one overseas and actually see them with video conferencing. It also changed the way we research and look for information because all you need is a computer with an internet connection to look for something nowadays. Almost everything and anything can be found in the internet. However, before someone can find something, another person should have already placed it in there in the first place. Let us take a newly formed company as an example and let us name it Company AAA. Company AAA hypothetically sells a new line of cellular phones, however most people would like to know what does this company offer and what are the features available with the new line of cellular phones. Most likely, these people would look for it in the internet, but Company AAA did not put up a website about their company and products so they lose potential buyers. This can happen to any company, so it is important to put up a website.

Putting up a website is not as easy as it may sound however; it takes knowledge and skill to put up an effective website. What if you do not have enough knowledge about websites? Then you can buy web templates instead of creating your own. Buying web templates have certain advantages and the biggest of them all is the quality of the template. You can buy a template for less than $70 and you get a template that is top quality and you save a lot of time. If you hire a webmaster or a web designer, the price can be a lot higher plus it would take a week to two weeks to finish. Then, after paying for the template and receiving the template usually through email, the seller would usually include clip arts and other animation and sprites that you can use to customize and complete your website yourself.

It may not be created by a top notch web designer or even information technology personnel, but after buying a web template and customizing it yourself then it would look like a quality website that could almost rival those created by experts. Plus, you get to customize it yourself so you get exactly what you want and you are ensured that the website suites the need of your company or business. A properly created website would be a really big help to any business or company and would provide a platform to communicate and connect with current and potential customers of the company. Providing information has never been this easy and if you buy web templates you provide that information in a quality and effective way.

What used to be the first thing you thought of when buying a computer? If you are like most consumers you wondered how much disk space is available. It will vary depending on what type of web site you are creating but disk space is not such an issue anymore with the advancement of computer systems.

Disk space is just not as important as it use to be. There is plenty of space to go around for almost any application that you would like to work with. For websites there is also plenty of room to buy enough space to keep your site fully functioning. If you are still confused about computer disk space and web site space continue reading for a basic introduction to the two and their functions.

Novice Users

If you are new to the Internet or just new to making your own site there are a few things you should begin with.

Look into buying or borrowing a dictionary of web hosting terminology. You don’t want to have problems understand the terminology when dealing with a web host. Shop around for the best deal. This is where knowing the terminology is quite helpful. Take your time. When shopping for your new Internet host do not rush the process, spend time doing research.

Getting Started

Keep in mind the importance of knowing your terminology when creating a website. You want to think about some important issues.

First of all there is the issue of disk space. Disk space basically means the amount of hard drive disk space you are allowed to use from your hosting service. Unless you plan to use a lot of graphics such as with an adult site, or clip art you won’t need very much disk space. On the hand, if you are using a lot flash programs or detailed clip art you will require more space. Java scripts, like used in a lot of chat rooms will take up more space. Most people don’t require more than 5MB of disk space when starting. You can add more lately if needed.

You Got It!

Now that you are up and running with your website, keep these tips in mind.

Unless you are running a lot of scripts on your page or offering downloads you won’t use more than the standard amount of 10-12MB. Adding more disk space later is simple and worth waiting to do until necessary. There is no need to spend extra money to purchase more space upfront, wait and see how your website progresses and if it will be necessary.

Enjoy your new website and good luck to you!

While almost anyone can have a web site these days it’s much harder to have a good website. From design aspects to readable content many sites fall flat. Below I’ve arranged a Top 10 list, because everyone loves a Top 10!

Include a detailed About Us page

The About Us page is a good place for new visitors and target traffic to find out who you are, why they should read your content or buy your products, how valuable your site can be, and also general information about your company, web site, or you.

It’s a good idea to include contact information or at least a clear link to your Contact Us page. Keep concise and accurate. People want to read about you but they don’t want a novel. Add important information on this page and point them to other pages for more in depth coverage.

Include a Contact Us page

Visitors (shoppers, target traffic) need an easy way to get in touch. Have a clearly marked link for contact information and include every avenue you receive communication through. Telephone and fax numbers (both local and 800), e-mail addresses, physical addresses, etc. all should appear on this page.

To help navigate further, clearly indicate which contacts go where (i.e. Admin, Tech, Sales, etc.) This will decrease frustration on both ends and allow better communication to flow. You want to show your visitors that you are competent and friendly, being easy to contact is one of the best ways to accomplish this goal.

Add a News, Press Release, Blog, and/or Articles Page

These pages inform customers of current events, products, endorsements, and other company happenings all in one place. Make sure to maintain these pages with fresh content that is reader friendly so your target traffic is more likely to come back, bookmark your page, and they may even provide word-of-mouth advertising. Free advertising!

As a bonus, search engines love these types of pages. New, fresh, relevant content is the stuff of search engines (well, there’s obviously more to it than just content). Each time a search engine spider crawls your site and find new content it ups your chances of ranking higher in the organic search listings. More free advertising!

A Relevant Page Title

As uninteresting as this may sound your page title holds a lot of weight. If you’re unfamiliar with a page title it is the name appearing in the blue bar across the top of the page. If your says something like “Untitled Document” I’m talking to you.

Page titles should be different for every page in your site. They should clearly and accurately describe your page, and you should try to use keywords in the page title.

Search engines display the title of your page on SERPs. The catchier and more accurate your title the better the chance you’ll hit target traffic.

A Relevant Page Name

Again, not so interesting as flashy designs or up-to-the-minute content, but it’s a necessity to get your target traffic to your page to see or read the goods.

It’s better to have straightforward page name showing in the URL than names with ? or other symbols and numbers. For example, a search engine will go to www.yourdomain.com/about us.htm it will only go to the ? in www.yourdomain.com/aboutus?094837 . You want search engines to find your pages. You also want humans to be able to read your names. Keep it simple and clean.

Good Grammar, Correct Spelling, Complete Thoughts, Sentence Structure

Everything you were supposed to learn in grade school, use it now. Not only should your site have relevant content – the more the better – people should be able to read your content. Choppy or runon sentences that seem to go nowhere cannot provide the type of readership concise, correct sentences can.

Misspellings, wrong word usage, bad grammar are all distractions. You do not want to distract your readers, you want to captivate them. Slang and derogatory language also distracts. If your site is a business site avoid slang and offensive language all together – unless that’s your selling point. Jargon is different, just don’t confuse readers more than necessary.

If you aren’t in command of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, etc. or if you’d rather focus your efforts elsewhere, that’s fine. It’s a good idea to beg, plead, hire, or force someone else to take care of this part then as ignoring the problem won’t make it go away though it may have that effect on site traffic.

Professional Design, Colors, and Images

Design should be implemented with usability in mind. Not all visitors will be as web savvy as you’d like, create easy navigation and links to all your pages. A search bar for your site is also a good idea.

Colors should be inviting, not blinding. Use colors to emphasize your brand, product or content. Don’t overpower the visitor with colors. Use colors to make text pop without being distracting or hard to read.

Images should be friendly and relevant to your site. Images of people work better than objects and clip art rarely has a positive effect. Make sure your images can load within a reasonable amount of time, you don’t want to lose visitors because a single image caused an incredible amount of load time, or worse froze the visitors browser.

Make Sure ALL Links Are Working Links

This should be a no-brainer, however it is always a good idea to check and double check your links. Fix any broken links A.S.A.P. Your reputation counts on it.

Think of any site you’ve been to with a broken link. Disappointing isn’t it? You probably left or at least had a negative image about the company. Avoid this mistake and check, recheck, and check your links again.

Use Your Log Files

Log files offer a plethora of information on your web site, your visitors, what works and what doesn’t. You can’t afford to miss out on this information – if you can afford it you shouldn’t anyway.

Best idea: Get a program that converts the lengthy text into readable documentation. It’ll save you time and energy while getting you the information you desire. Log files will describe customer behavior, they will show you broken links, and you’ll see where customers flow freely and where they abandon the site. The invaluable information is at your finger tips. Use it!

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificates

These can be used on any site asking for sensitive information. Not every web site needs this, however if you plan to collect any visitor information it is a good idea to have some SSL pages. Though not every page need be SSL.

Pages requiring e-mail, names, telephone numbers, addresses, credit card information, social security information or any other information visitors may not readily be giving up online should be securely collected via SSL.
